Window Herb Jars

Something always eats my basil. Every. Single. Year. I can understand why. It’s delicious, smells good and its taste compliments a plethora of foods. Am I selfish in asking that it remain un-nibbled?  This year, to save my basil, I decided to bring my herbs inside and grow them on my kitchen window sill in glass jars.

I’m excited about this planting technique because I have an over abundance of glass jars due to a canning obsession I went through a couple years ago.

We do a lot of cooking in our home, so I also bought some sage, thyme and oregano plants to add to my jar garden.

It’s been about three weeks now since I planted the herbs in the jars and they are doing amazing! I was actually quite worried that they would die, but they are thriving! My basil is especially happy and nothing is snacking on it other than me.

Herbs in Glass Jars DIY

I bought herbs that were already established and in disposable containers.

  1. Fill the bottom of the jar (about 1 inch) with rocks. This will help with water drainage so the plant doesn’t get overly wet roots.

  2. On top of the rocks add organic dirt until the jar is a little over half full.

  3. Take the plant out of its disposable container and loosen up the dirt around the roots.

  4. Gently press the plant’s roots into the jar leaving about 1 inch of space between the newly planted herb and the top of the jar.

  5. Set jars by a window that gets as much full sun as possible and water when needed.

I used sticker labels (from the dollar store) to label the jars and some twine for decoration.
